Discover the many ways in which dental veneers can give you your dream smile.

A perfect smile isn’t just something that the rich and famous can enjoy. In fact, anyone living in Niskayuna, NY, can get the perfect, symmetrical smiles they want thanks to our dentists, Dr. Kent Molino and Dr. Todd Vaccaro. While you may not be walking down the red carpet anytime soon, dental veneers can certainly give you a smile that’s worthy of a celebrity!

What are dental veneers?

Veneers are ultra-thin shells made from a tooth-colored material such as porcelain. When these thin layers of porcelain are bonded to the front of a tooth they look like a pristine layer of tooth enamel while also hiding common imperfections such as,

  • Discolorations and severe stains
  • Chips and cracks
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Minor misalignments (crowding or crookedness)
  • Misshapen, worn or malformed teeth

By and large, if you are dealing with cosmetic flaws that affect the shape, length, color, or even alignment of your smile, then dental veneers may be able to help you.

What goes into getting veneers?

It’s important to understand the process so that you can decide whether this cosmetic treatment is for you. Of course, the first is that you will need to consult our Niskayuna, NY, dentists to make sure that your smile is healthy enough for treatment.

Next, since veneers are bonded to the front surface of your teeth, we will need to remove a very small amount of enamel from each tooth in order to make room for the veneers. This tooth preparation is minor and can often be done without even needing anesthesia; however, it’s important to understand that enamel doesn’t grow back. Once the teeth have been prepped for veneers, you will have veneers for the rest of your life.

Each veneer is custom-made based off specific measurements taken of your smile. In order to get the right veneers for you, we will need to take impressions of your teeth. Once your veneers are ready, we will check the look, fit, and bite before applying them permanently to your teeth. Most patients can get beautiful, brand new smiles in just 2-3 visits.

Say goodbye to tooth loss and say hello to a beautiful tooth replacement.

Dental Implants SmileThere are many reasons adults turn to dental implants to replace their missing teeth. After all, implants are truly unique, as they function and look just like a real tooth. While the goal is to maintain a healthy natural smile forever, when this isn’t possible our Niskayuna, NY, cosmetic dentists Dr. Kent Molino and Dr. Todd Vaccaro understand how important it is to get a dental restoration that is as close to a real tooth as possible.

This is where dental implants come into the picture. An implant is a small metal screw or post that is up to 10mm long. It is placed within the jawbone to take the place of your missing tooth’s roots. In order to get an implant, our Niskayuna, NY, general dentists will need to perform minor surgery in order to open up the gums to reveal the jawbone. From there, a small hole is drilled into the bone and the implant is placed. Once the implant has been placed the gums are stitched back up.

How do dental implants work?

Placing the implant into the jawbone is just the beginning stage of getting your new tooth. After the implant has been placed we will allow your mouth a few months (anywhere from 3-6 months) to heal. During this healing phase the jawbone will begin to fuse together with the implant to become one. This is possible because the implant is made from titanium, a biocompatible metal.

Once the implant has been placed and it fuses together with the jawbone the next step will be to place an abutment, which connects the implant with the false tooth. In some instances an implant may already have an abutment built-in. If this is the case then this surgery won’t be necessary. To get an abutment, we will need to open up the gums to place the abutment on top of the implant. Once the gums heal (this can take several weeks) then we can cement a custom dental crown over the implant.

What are the benefits of getting dental implants?

Since implants function just like a real tooth they offer some pretty amazing benefits such as,

  • Preserving your jawbone and preventing bone loss
  • Preserving your natural facial structure
  • Preventing teeth from shifting into open gaps in your smile
  • Restoring chewing and speaking
  • Instilling confidence in your appearance

Implants are also easy to care for and could end up lasting the rest of your life if you maintain good oral hygiene.

Dental Implants ExampleTooth loss is nothing to ignore. While you may be able to ignore that gap left over by your missing tooth, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the issues you’ll deal with if you leave your tooth loss untreated. If you are currently missing one or more teeth it’s the perfect time to turn to our Niskayuna, NY, dentists Dr. Kent Molino and Dr. Todd Vaccaro, who offer an incredible long-term solution that can replace missing teeth for the long term.

What are dental implants?

An implant is a small metal post or fixture that is designed to replace your missing tooth’s roots by being embedded within the jawbone. While the metal post itself won’t actually be your tooth, it will provide a strong foundation from which to support a false tooth or teeth. Implants are often made from durable, biocompatible metal such as titanium.

How do dental implants work?

In order for an implant to do its job properly, our Niskayuna, NY, family dentist will need to first place the implant into the jawbone during a minor surgical procedure. Your dentist will map out exactly where your implant will go within the jawbone, apply local anesthesia to the area, open up the gums and make a small hole in the jawbone where the implant will go. Once the implant is placed into the bone the procedure is complete.

Of course, in order for the implant to be successful one very important thing needs to happen: the jawbone and tissue will need to fuse together. This is a naturally occurring process that will happen the procedure. When the bone and tissue begin to heal they will naturally grow around the implant to become one complete unit. Now the implant is a permanent part of the jawbone, able to provide it with the stimulation it needs from the tooth roots to prevent bone deterioration.

From there, sometimes a second procedure needs to take place in which an abutment is placed. The sole purpose of an abutment is to be able to connect the implant, which is hidden under the gums within the jawbone, with the false tooth (a dental crown).

Once everything has healed we will provide you with your dental crown, which we will permanently place over the abutment to complete the restoration.

Dr. Kent Molino and Dr. Todd Vaccaro in Niskayuna, NY, pride themselves on offering the very best in dental care, whether you are just looking to get a routine checkup or you want to find out if dental implants are right for you. Clean, removable, invisible, and snug--these words describe Invisalign aligners, the discreet alternative to metal braces. Patients wear no invisalignirritating wires or brackets. Instead, thin, customized appliances move crooked teeth into straight, functional positions. At their Niskayuna, NY, office, Dr. Kent Molino and Dr. Todd Vaccaro offer Invisalign to teens and adults as a quicker, unobtrusive way to better smiles.

The invisible Invisalign way

It starts with an orthodontic evaluation:

  • A complete oral examination (your teeth and gums must be healthy before starting any orthodontic procedures)
  • X-rays
  • Three-dimensional digital scanning

From there, Dr. Molino or Dr. Vaccaro devise a treatment plan to show you the position of your teeth through each stage of Invisalign treatment. You'll wear a series of thin, clear appliances, specially crafted at the Invisalign lab by a highly trained technician. The aligners look like teeth whitening trays. They are removable so you can easily eat, brush, and floss.

There are 18 to 30 aligner pairs in all, and you'll wear each pair for approximately two weeks. While some soreness is expected at the beginning of Invisalign treatment, patients generally feel comfortable as treatment progresses. Plus, you'll enjoy Invisalign's discreet appearance.

The treatment process in Niskayuna

Orthodontic correction with Invisalign takes less time than metal, ceramic, and lingual braces. On average, treatment lasts nine to 15 months, about half that of traditional braces.

During that time, you'll see your dentist every 4 to 6 weeks and receive new aligner pairs. To keep treatment progressing correctly, you'll wear the appliances 20 to 22 hours a day. You take them out to eat, floss, and brush and if you have a special event such as a wedding or professional presentation. When you've completed your treatment, you'll love your smile!

What Invisalign corrects

Invisalign works for many common bite issues (such as overbite), tooth rotation and tipping, gaps and crowding. However, severe issues require conventional appliances. So rely on the wise advice of Dr. Molino or Dr. Vaccaro to decide if Invisalign is right for your mouth.

When your teeth don’t feel strong or have significant damage, it can make you feel insecure about eating and showing off your smile. If one dental crownsor more of your teeth aren’t as strong as they used to be, dental crowns can help restore their strength and good looks. They are caps that are custom-designed to cover the outer part of a tooth to provide stability. Consult a family dentist at Molino and Vaccaro Dental in Niskayuna, NY, to see if this restorative treatment will work for you.

Common Tooth Damage Causes

A lot of tooth damage happens due to normal wear and tear or aging. But some patients have damaged teeth because they eat too many hard candies or have a problem with bruxism (tooth grinding). Dental decay can also cause permanent damage to a tooth, requiring a root canal and crown. Patients who play contact sports may be more prone to dental injuries like cracked and chipped teeth.

Strengthen Your Teeth with Dental Crowns

Most dental crowns are made of resilient porcelain material that both strengthens and whitens broken, discolored teeth. They form a complete outer protective layer, guarding the tooth from dental decay and damage from enamel erosion. It’s also difficult for dental stains to absorb into porcelain. The crowns used in bridges can also strengthen your smile by closing the large gaps caused by missing teeth.

Additional Dental Crown Advantages

There’s a good chance that one or more people you know have at least one dental crown as it is a very common dental procedure. Here are a few additional advantages of getting dental crowns installed by your Niskayuna, NY, family dentist:

  • If you keep up with good dental hygiene, your crown can last for 10 years or longer.
  • Crowns look so natural that no one will be able to tell you have one.
  • If you have a crown due to dental decay, the inside of your tooth will have a better chance to heal after a root canal procedure.

Crowns Restore Your Smile

As healthy and strong as your teeth may be right now, crowns can make them even stronger. Contact a family dentist at Molino and Vaccaro Dental in Niskayuna, NY, to schedule a crown consultation with Dr. Kent Molino or Dr. Todd Vaccaro.
