Say goodbye to tooth loss and say hello to a beautiful tooth replacement.

Dental Implants SmileThere are many reasons adults turn to dental implants to replace their missing teeth. After all, implants are truly unique, as they function and look just like a real tooth. While the goal is to maintain a healthy natural smile forever, when this isn’t possible our Niskayuna, NY, cosmetic dentists Dr. Kent Molino and Dr. Todd Vaccaro understand how important it is to get a dental restoration that is as close to a real tooth as possible.

This is where dental implants come into the picture. An implant is a small metal screw or post that is up to 10mm long. It is placed within the jawbone to take the place of your missing tooth’s roots. In order to get an implant, our Niskayuna, NY, general dentists will need to perform minor surgery in order to open up the gums to reveal the jawbone. From there, a small hole is drilled into the bone and the implant is placed. Once the implant has been placed the gums are stitched back up.

How do dental implants work?

Placing the implant into the jawbone is just the beginning stage of getting your new tooth. After the implant has been placed we will allow your mouth a few months (anywhere from 3-6 months) to heal. During this healing phase the jawbone will begin to fuse together with the implant to become one. This is possible because the implant is made from titanium, a biocompatible metal.

Once the implant has been placed and it fuses together with the jawbone the next step will be to place an abutment, which connects the implant with the false tooth. In some instances an implant may already have an abutment built-in. If this is the case then this surgery won’t be necessary. To get an abutment, we will need to open up the gums to place the abutment on top of the implant. Once the gums heal (this can take several weeks) then we can cement a custom dental crown over the implant.

What are the benefits of getting dental implants?

Since implants function just like a real tooth they offer some pretty amazing benefits such as,

  • Preserving your jawbone and preventing bone loss
  • Preserving your natural facial structure
  • Preventing teeth from shifting into open gaps in your smile
  • Restoring chewing and speaking
  • Instilling confidence in your appearance

Implants are also easy to care for and could end up lasting the rest of your life if you maintain good oral hygiene.

Dental Implants ExampleTooth loss is nothing to ignore. While you may be able to ignore that gap left over by your missing tooth, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the issues you’ll deal with if you leave your tooth loss untreated. If you are currently missing one or more teeth it’s the perfect time to turn to our Niskayuna, NY, dentists Dr. Kent Molino and Dr. Todd Vaccaro, who offer an incredible long-term solution that can replace missing teeth for the long term.

What are dental implants?

An implant is a small metal post or fixture that is designed to replace your missing tooth’s roots by being embedded within the jawbone. While the metal post itself won’t actually be your tooth, it will provide a strong foundation from which to support a false tooth or teeth. Implants are often made from durable, biocompatible metal such as titanium.

How do dental implants work?

In order for an implant to do its job properly, our Niskayuna, NY, family dentist will need to first place the implant into the jawbone during a minor surgical procedure. Your dentist will map out exactly where your implant will go within the jawbone, apply local anesthesia to the area, open up the gums and make a small hole in the jawbone where the implant will go. Once the implant is placed into the bone the procedure is complete.

Of course, in order for the implant to be successful one very important thing needs to happen: the jawbone and tissue will need to fuse together. This is a naturally occurring process that will happen the procedure. When the bone and tissue begin to heal they will naturally grow around the implant to become one complete unit. Now the implant is a permanent part of the jawbone, able to provide it with the stimulation it needs from the tooth roots to prevent bone deterioration.

From there, sometimes a second procedure needs to take place in which an abutment is placed. The sole purpose of an abutment is to be able to connect the implant, which is hidden under the gums within the jawbone, with the false tooth (a dental crown).

Once everything has healed we will provide you with your dental crown, which we will permanently place over the abutment to complete the restoration.

Dr. Kent Molino and Dr. Todd Vaccaro in Niskayuna, NY, pride themselves on offering the very best in dental care, whether you are just looking to get a routine checkup or you want to find out if dental implants are right for you. Your best smile--is it really possible? You have some deep stains and a gap in between your two front teeth. Habitually, you cover them veneersbecause you feel self-conscious. But, your dentists in Niskayuna, NY, Dr. Kent Molino and Dr. Todd Vaccaro, offer a cosmetic treatment perfect for your situation. Called porcelain veneers, these tooth-shaped shells of ceramic cover a variety of enamel defects. Read more about this beautiful way to refinish your smile.

Porcelain veneers and you

You may be a good match for each other. Dr. Vaccaro or Dr. Molino will examine your teeth and gums to find out. Your teeth and gums should be free of decay and gum disease. If they are, the dentist will take oral impressions and prepare your teeth with a limited enamel resurfacing. He'll place temporary veneers and send a treatment plan to the dental lab where a skilled ceramist will craft each veneer individually.

On your return visit, your Niskayuna dentist will remove your temporary veneers, treat your teeth with an etching liquid and then place the veneers. He'll look at the shape, fit and color match. Then, he'll apply a special bonding adhesive which the dentist may adjust in shade to blend in with neighboring teeth. Finally, he completes the process with a curing light which ensures a strong bond.

Uses of porcelain veneers

They disguise many dental flaws, including:

  • Gaps
  • Crowding
  • Chips
  • Hairline cracks
  • Odd tooth shape and uneven length
  • Deep stains which do not respond to professional whitening

Additionally, veneers strengthen teeth which have thin enamel or which have lost a fair amount their structure due to oral trauma. However, veneers do not require the extensive enamel reshaping which dental crowns do.

Caring for your veneers

Brushing and flossing are no different--with or without veneers. Follow American Dental Association guidelines: floss daily and brush twice a day with a soft toothbrush. Also, see Dr. Molino and Dr. Vaccaro as usual every six months for a cleaning and check-up. Your dentist will make sure your veneers are solidly in place and that your gums are healthy.

Avoid things which stress tooth surfaces: eating hard foods and opening bottles with your teeth are examples. If you grind your teeth, consider a customized bite guard to cushion your smile.

Also, while veneers are stain resistant, limit coffee, blueberries and other dark menu choices, says the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Eliminate cigarettes and chewing tobacco, too, to keep veneers bright and your health vibrant. With good care, your porcelain veneers in Niskayuna should last for a decade or more.

A great smile

It could be within your reach. Find out the details on porcelain veneers during a personal smile consultation with Dr. Molino or Dr. Vaccaro in Niskayuna, NY. Call the office today for an appointment: (518) 377-3628.

Learn about dental bonding from your Niskayuna bonding

Small imperfections in your smile can have a big effect on your self-esteem. Luckily, many problems are easy to correct with dental bonding. Dr. Kent Molino and Dr. Todd Vaccaro, your Niskayuna, NY, family dentists explain how you can benefit from bonding.

What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding is a fairly simple technique that can dramatically improve your smile. Flexible composite resin, the bonding material dentists use, can be manipulated into any shape, making it the ideal choice to restore chipped portions of a tooth or cover a stain. After the composite resin is applied to your tooth, it's hardened with a special curing light.

Is bonding a good choice for me?

Dental bonding is a versatile treatment that can address multiple issues. In addition to repairing chipped or broken teeth and covering stains due to medication side effects or dental work, it can also be used to:

  • Repair Cracks: Small cracks disappear when the bonding material is applied. Larger cracks and chips may require dental crowns.
  • Lengthen Teeth: Short teeth can affect your bite, making it more difficult to chew and even triggering headaches in some cases. Bonding lengthens naturally short teeth and those that have become too short due to grinding.
  • Cover Tooth Roots: Receding gums expose your tooth roots, triggering sensitivity any time you eat or drink hot or cold foods and beverages. Bonding covers roots, reducing sensitivity.
  • Change the Appearance of Oddly Shaped Teeth: Bonding can transform teeth that are crooked, twisted, pointed or oddly shaped.
  • Close Gaps: Do you dislike the small gaps between your teeth? Bonding offers a simple way to close those gaps. If you have large gaps, orthodontic treatment may be a better option.
  • Fill Teeth: Since composite resin is available in a variety of shades designed to match the most common tooth colors, your new filling won't be obvious.

Make over your smile with dental bonding! Call Dr. Molino and Dr. Vaccaro, your Niskayuna, NY, family dentists, at (518) 377-3628 to schedule your appointment.

Have you been considering veneers but aren't sure if they're the right choice for you? Dr. Todd Vaccaro and Dr. Kent Molino, your veneersNiskayuna, NY dentists, answer a few commonly asked questions about veneers.

What are veneers?

Veneers are an innovative cosmetic dentistry option that hide imperfections under a thin layer of porcelain bonded to teeth. Since veneers are added to the fronts on teeth only, they don't require extensive dental work. Porcelain is usually used in veneers because it reflects light in the same way tooth enamel does.

Will veneers help me?

Veneers are an excellent choice if your teeth are healthy but just have a few flaws. They're also a good option if you have chips in teeth, or the surface of your teeth are pitted or uneven. Veneers can also hide discolorations that can occur if you've taken tetracycline or other strong antibiotics in the past or if large fillings or other dental procedures have discolored a tooth.

Do you dislike the gap between your front teeth? Although orthodontic treatment can close the gap, there's no need to spend several years wearing braces if your gap is small and doesn't interfere with your bite. When you add veneers to your front teeth, annoying little gaps disappear.

Veneers are also used to make problem teeth blend in with the rest of your smile. If one tooth is pointed, twisted or too short, adding a veneers offers a simple way to transform your smile.

How long does it take to get a veneer?

You'll need two treatment sessions if your choose veneers. During your first appointment, your Niskayuna dentist will prepare the fronts of your teeth to make sure the new veneers fit well without being too bulky. After preparing the teeth, he'll make impressions of your mouth, which will be sent to the dental laboratory that will create your veneers. If you want your new veneer to match the color of your other teeth, your dentist will select a shade that closely matches your natural tooth color. If veneers are used for all-over whitening, your dentist will ask you to select the shade you prefer.

In a week or two, you'll return to the office and be fitted with your new veneers. After your dentist makes a few adjustments, he'll bond them to your teeth and you can begin to enjoy your new smile.

Improve your smile with veneers. Find out if veneers are a good option for you by calling Dr. Vaccaro and Dr. Molino, your Niskayuna, NY dentists, at (518) 377-3628 to schedule an appointment.
