Good Oral Hygiene

Maintaining good oral hygiene becomes a habit when you stick to a daily routine that includes brushing at least twice a day. A few specific steps you can take at home to maintain good oral hygiene include:

  • Floss daily
  • Use a toothpaste with fluoride
  • Rinse with a fluoridated mouth rinse daily
  • Limit consumption of sugary snacks and foods

The proper way to brush is to gently scrub all of the surface areas inside the mouth, including teeth, gums and tongue. Brushing all surface areas helps clean away the bacteria that cause gingivitis and cavities. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles that are not too abrasive. The toothbrush should also fit comfortably in your mouth so be sure to select an appropriately sized toothbrush.

Keeping good oral hygiene habits is important for preventing gum disease, cavities and tooth decay. Maintaining good oral hygiene, which includes regular dental visits, will help your teeth last a lifetime. Learn which toothbrush is best for you from your Niskayuna dentist.

Choosing the best toothbrush will help you ensure that your teeth stay strong and healthy. Dr. Kent B. Molino and Dr. Todd L. Vaccaro, tooth brushyour Niskayuna, NY family dentists, share a few tips that will help you pick the right toothbrush.

Red, blue or green?

There's a lot more to toothbrush selection than just choosing a color. When you shop for your next brush, consider:

  • Bristle Type: Soft bristle toothbrushes are the best choice for your tooth and gums. Although it might seem as if harder bristles would be more effective at removing plaque, these brushes can damage your enamel and cause your gums to recede, which can cause tooth sensitivity. Soft brushes are just as effective at removing plaque, but won't damage your teeth and gums.
  • Head Size: Your toothbrush should fit comfortably in your mouth. If your toothbrush head is too large, it may be difficult to reach all of your teeth. It may take longer than necessary to clean teeth with a head that's too small. If your mouth is small, there's nothing wrong with buying children's toothbrushes to make brushing easier.
  • Manual or Power: Both manual and power toothbrushes do a good job of getting your teeth clean. The choice really depends on your personal preference. Power toothbrushes, particularly those that play music when they're turned on, can make toothbrushing a more pleasant experience for children in some cases. Power brushes are appropriate for children (and anyone) aged 3 and up.

The two-minute rule

If you can brush your teeth in 30 seconds or less, you're probably not getting your teeth clean enough. Spend at least two minutes brushing your teeth to make sure that you've adequately cleaned very surface.

Don't forget about other oral hygiene products

Flossing once a day removes plaque and food particles from between teeth. It doesn't matter whether you floss in the morning or evening, as long as you make flossing a daily habit. The next time you buy mouthwash, read the label to make sure the product is antimicrobial and fluoridated. These substances kill bacteria that can cause cavities and help strengthen your tooth enamel.

Good oral hygiene, combined with regular dental visits, are essential for a healthy smile. If it's time for your next visit, call Dr. Vaccaro and Dr. Molino, your Niskayuna, NY family dentists, at (518) 377-3628 to schedule an appointment.

Dental check-ups are crucial to your child’s oral and overall health. However, determining when your child should begin seeing their children's dental visitfamily dentist can be confusing. Do you know when your child should start visiting the dentist? Find out more with your Niskayuna, NY dentists, Dr. Kent B. Molino and Dr. Todd L. Vaccaro.

When should my child start seeing the dentist?
The first sign a child should see their dentist is the eruption of their first tooth. Since every child is different, this could occur at different times. The general rule of thumb is that children should see their dentist by their first birthday. Regular dental check-ups as the teeth grow in allow your dentist to examine your child’s mouth and teeth to ensure they hit their dental milestones on time. Additionally, your dentist can administer any dental care your child may require.

How can I keep my child’s teeth healthy between dental visits?
Keeping your child’s teeth healthy begins before dental visits become necessary. Parents should wipe babies’ gums with a soft, damp cloth after feeding times and before bed. They should also avoid giving babies a bottle of anything other than water before bed as this could trigger plaque buildup. When your child’s first tooth erupts, begin helping them brush their teeth at least twice a day. When the teeth begin growing close enough together to touch, teach your child to floss at least once a day. Instilling these good habits early can mean a lifetime of good oral hygiene.

Pediatric Dental Examinations and Cleanings in Niskayuna, NY
Your child’s first dental appointment will most likely be more of a meet-and-greet than a dental appointment. The first appointment sets the tone for the child’s dental experiences, making it important to establish that the dentist is fun and not scary. As your child grows and more teeth erupt, regular teeth cleanings help keep their mouths decay-free and prevent gum disease.

The family vacation--it's one destination for mom, dad and kids. The same idea applies to the family dentist. This skilled health care professional provides dental services for the entire family--from tots to teens to adults in their senior years.

Todd L. Vaccaro DDS and Kent B. Molino DDS know how important family dentistry is. That's why they have dedicated their Niskayuna, Dental Visits NY practice to the delivery of precise preventive, restorative and cosmetic dental services in a friendly, patient-centered atmosphere.

Prevention is Foundational

Nothing treats a smile better than preventive dental care. Dr. Vaccaro and Molino stress semi-annual dental exams and professional cleanings to keep teeth and gums healthy and smiling--no matter what the age.

During a check-up with one of these Niskayuna, NY family dentists, patients receive the finest in diagnostics and treatment plans. Dr. Vaccaro or Dr. Molino starts each exam by updating the patient's medical history, including surgeries and medications because family dentists understand that oral health and overall health affect each other. The dentist then:

  • looks for signs of decay and gum disease (periodontal probing)
  • observes how teeth bite together and how jaws align
  • assesses the soft tissues for signs of oral cancer
  • checks how well current dental work is doing (fillings, bridges, implants, bonding, crowns)
  • formulates a treatment plan
  • uses x-rays if necessary to look for hidden decay and to visualize roots and bone structure

A treatment plan may be as simple as continuing routine exams and cleanings or could include restorative work when needed and cosmetic work as the patient desires.

Plus, a skilled dental hygienist scales the teeth and polishes them, too. This gentle process removes bacteria-filled sticky plaque and hard tartar from gums and between teeth, preventing decay, gum disease and adverse effects on systemic health. Patients young to old benefit from the instruction hygienists give about brushing, flossing and a healthy diet.

While dental needs vary from family to family and from person to person in that family, trust Molino and Vaccaro Dental for care that meets each patient's individual needs. Comprehensive services include:

  • fluoride treatments and plastic sealants to protect enamel
  • Invisalign clear aligners for mild to moderate orthodontic correction
  • tooth replacement with bridges, dentures and modern dental implants
  • tooth extractions
  • root canal and periodontal therapies
  • teeth whitening
  • porcelain veneers
  • emergency dentistry
  • Under Armour mouth guards

Your Niskayuna, NY family dentist is available for questions and for emergencies such as tooth fracture or intense toothache. The Molino and Vaccaro dental team values patient comfort and well-being.
